The Listening Tree is a combination of a color organ and a fiber optic tree. The color organ has been around for many years, receiving an electrical sound input then producing an interesting variation of color and intensities that synchronize with the sound. The fiber optic tree is most commonly seen around Christmas. It consists of a base containing a light source that projects upward through a spray of optical fibers. The colors are often made to change by various means.
The Listening Tree combines these concepts. Its sound source is an electret microphone, which allows it to respond to any sounds around it. The easy to build hardware amplifies the signal then separates the result into bands. The Listening Tree produces very interesting patterns which are controlled by software loaded into an Arduino UNO. Play music and it will respond. Talk to it and it will respond.
