Jameco Attends The Strategies in Light Conference

Straegies There is nothing like working a trade show which contrasts packing my brain with exciting new technologies, to standing on my feet all day. I worked the show for a day and a half and had a blast at the longest-running and largest conference in the HB LED and lighting industry. Below are the technologies that caught my eye.

The lighting industry is currently dominated by three major corporations: GE, Philips, and Germany's OSRAM (makers of Sylvania products), but with LED's becoming more popular, the industry is now opening up to companies, such as Digital Light, which have expertise in semiconductors. Digital Light's focus was the Pharox60 – a 6W dimmable LED bulb.

The Pharox60 is made for standard household light fixtures and in my opinion, was one of the best products at the show. It was one of the most energy-efficient bulbs with a light output of 300+ lumens and a warm white light of 3,000K. A patented heat-sink kept the bulb temperature low and it was also the most environmentally-friendly option at the show, containing no lead, mercury, or tungsten.

OSRAM also dropped by the show and demonstrated a 3M ultra-miniature pico projector working with their OSTAR projection module.

The demo worked great, but since it was low on the table, it gave me a bit of a stiff neck and so I cut it short. The OSTAR projection modules would seem to be the gold standard in consumer projection applications because they're exceptionally bright and long-lasting. Since they also have no moving parts and are built tough, they're ideal for home cinema projectors/displays.

I also met with Marvell, the world leader in integrated silicon solutions. They were showing off the largest and most decoratively stunning booth by far.

The demo, however, wasn't anything too impressive in comparison to the booth, but Marvell's new LED lighting products targeted at residential and commercial applications should be in the top class of performance. The first products from this series, the Marvell 88EM8081 and 88EM8080 LED controllers, can be used in a wide variety of solid-state lighting applications with output power ranges up to 150W, such as streetlights, parking lights, and incandescent bulb replacements.

Nuventix, a thermal management solutions company based in Austin, TX, showed off a number of cooling devices for high-power LED lighting for the consumer electronics, medical, telecommunications, and automotive industries. Many of these used SynJet Coolers.

The SynJet nozzles, equipped with a customized heat-sink, generate turbulent pulses of air, which efficiently dissipate heat from the LED. The SynJet coolers seemed the most effective way to actively cool large-scale LED applications, such as stage lights, while maintaining power efficiency and reliability.

Similar in function to Moore's Law for maximum CPU transistor count, Haitz's Law predicts that the cost per lumen will decrease 10-fold while the amount of light generated per LED package will increase 20-fold. As was conveyed in the conferences, LED's are about 10 times more energy efficient than incandescent light bulbs with an average lifespan of approximately 20 years (which is 20-25 times more than your average incandescent light bulb). As a result, incandescent light bulbs slowly started being phased out by the US government in 2012. By the end of the decade, as according to the conferences, LED's will be the dominant source for commercial and residential lighting the world over as more and more energy companies, governmental agencies, and private corporations work together on a series of programs to encourage consumers to make 'the switch.'
